Ahead of the new SSE Airtricity League 2017 season, we caught up with Drogheda United midfielder Sean Brennan to see what he thinks ahead of the new campaign.
Q: Sean, back in the Premier Division with Drogheda United, how good does it feel to hear that?
SEAN: Fantastic, it really does. We had a good year last year and probably deserved to get promoted out of a tough First Division being the second best team in the league. It’s great to know we’re going to be back playing against the biggest clubs in the country.
Q: It was a really good season for you, did you expect it to be so good at the start of last season?
SEAN: We knew that we were going to find it hard hanging on to Limerick who were always going to be strong and obviously, flew away with it in the end. They had a strong squad and big crowds every week down there but we knew we could be up there at the end. The fans really rallied behind the club last season after the relegation and they really deserve to go back up. They are very loyal to the side so I’m sure it’ll be a great year for them.
Q: It will be a tough year next season with three clubs going down, is the ambition this season just to stay up?
SEAN: Well, it is now with three going down but we’re going to try and finish as high as we can in the table. I’d like to think we could get towards mid-table, I think we’ve got quality in that squad which might catch a few by surprise so with a few of the young lads really growing into themselves last season and we’ve brought in some experience, with the likes of Stephen Elliott signing, gives us a good backbone. All the teams in the league have strengthened, they’re all getting better but this is where you want to be, at the top and fighting it out.
Q: Lastly, the Louth Derby is back, Dundalk v Drogheda. You must be excited?
SEAN: It’s back! I’m really looking forward to it, I think everyone in Louth is. That why we wanted to be up here, playing in these games. Hopefully we can go and turn them over a couple of times this year.
