First Division Champions Shelbourne have plenty of reasons to be optimistic heading into their first top flight campaign since 2013.

Ian Morris has looked to get his business done early and got a number of big hitters through the Tolka Park door in November and December. Daniel O'Reilly, who was the Supporters' Player of the Season last year at Finn Harps, was one of the first signatures of the off-season and signalled early intent from Shels.

O'Reilly cited when he signed that it was Morris' intention 'to push on' which convinced him to sign which is an early indicator that the Dublin club won't just be looking to survive next season. And the next signing backed that theory up further.

Karl Sheppard, one of the most influential players in the SSE Airtricity League in the past decade with two Premier Division titles and two FAI Cups to his name, signed after his release from Cork City. The 28-year old's experience in the top flight will be invaluable to Shels and a potential link-up with Ciaran Kilduff should excite the Tolka Park faithful.

Aaron Dobbs signed a two-year deal with the club after his release from Shamrock Rovers where he had successful loan spells with Wexford and Longford Town. The 20-year old made his Premier Division debut at the age of 16 with Rovers and his move to Tolka Park presents a great opportunity for him to showcase his talents in the top flight.

Georgie Poynton will offer a fantastic option in central midfield after the 22-year old was snapped up following his departure from Waterford. The former Dundalk, Bohemians and St. Patrick's Athletic man now has a fantastic platform to progress and to get the game-time he needs for his development.

However, the most impressive signing of all was announced this month as Gary Deegan returned to the SSE Airtricity League. Having left these shores at the age of 22 when he moved from Bohemians to then-Championship side Coventry City, his return to the league represents a bit of a 'coup' for the Dublin club.

During his time in the English Football League, with spells at Shrewsbury, Southend United, Northampton Town and Cambridge United, Deegan has built up the reputation of a leader in the middle of the park. His time at Cambridge ended prematurely due to an illness but if he can find his fitness and form for the 2020 season, Shelbourne have the perfect player to supplement the young talent they've got in their ranks.

And their young talent is as exciting as any other club in the Premier Division. Jaze Kabia has captured the attention of a number of clubs with his form during the 2019 First Division campaign with both Shelbourne and Cobh Ramblers. Denzil Fernandes also caught the eye as a stylish attacking midfielder and Shane Farrell is also tipped as one to watch in an exciting squad at Tolka Park.

Notably, in their first pre-season game against Wexford, Under-19 player Alex Cetiner was handed the No.10 shirt. His pace and technique makes him another one to watch in what is a really competitive squad to get into the starting XI.

So, as stated above, many reasons to be optimistic for the Shels faithful. However, that should come with an element of caution. To expect a recently-promoted team to break into the top four, as it has been suggested in certain sections of the support, is a huge ask when getting used to the demands of the top flight.

Morris, and his newly-appointed assistant manager Craig Sexton who joins from Bohemians U-19s, should be given the time and patience to build towards the top-four ambition over the next few seasons.

The Premier Division looks set to be more competitive than ever next season with a number of clubs strengthening, if Shels can retain their top flight status this season, it would represent a successful campaign and a great platform to build upon in the coming years.

One thing is for sure, Shelbourne should bring a sold-out contingent down to Turner's Cross for the opening day of the season on February 14 and their fans should enjoy every minute of the 2020 season back in the big time.
