Patrick McEleney looks to be getting back to the type of form and fitness that made him such a fan favourite in his first stint at Dundalk and the FAI Cup win over Finn Harps was another aspect to that return with more minutes under his belt.

Since joining back in July while appearances have been limited the Derry native has shown glimpses of the impact he can have going forward as the SSE Airtricity League draws to a dramatic climax.

“It’s just getting minutes still, I think its a few games now but its hard to catch up with the boys when they are flying. But I am happy enough it’s a good win for us.”

As part of his catching up, strength and conditioning coach Danny Miller took McEleney on a 50km cycle around Dundalk and the surrounding areas as part of his cardio improvement. While it will reap benefits in the weeks to come, McEleney isn’t too keen on repeating the feat.

“It’s still haunting me to be honest! It’s one the hardest things I have ever done but it just has to be done in order to get fit but I’m happy enough.”

Next up for Dundalk is SSE Airtricity League action and the visit of Shamrock Rovers who had this weekend off from competitive play following their elimination in the competition at the hands of Drogheda United. McEleney is looking forward to the visit of Stephen Bradley’s men, games of which have always been exciting and competitive affairs.

“It’s always a tough game and I think it has shown over the years here, they are obviously a good side. But we will be ready, we will work now up until Tuesday and get ready for it.”

“It is but there is another spare three points to be won and kick on even more and I feel as if we can do that, we just have to get ourselves right. It’s a very tough game but we will be right for it.”
