Wexford FC produced a defensively solid display to earn themselves a creditable point after a scoreless stalemate with high-flying UCD at Ferrycarrig Park on Friday evening.

The Slaneysiders seem to have found the consistency they had been lacking and are now three games unbeaten, having beaten Cabinteely 1-0 and drawn 2-2 with Athlone Town in their previous two outings.

The hosts certainly had to soak up plenty of pressure from the Students, who missed out on an opportunity to close the gap on leaders Waterford FC, but a determined defensive effort meant that clear-cut opportunities weren't that plentiful.

Owen McCormack definitely played his part in keeping chances to a minimum and was happy that his side managed to get another point on the board.

“It was a very good point and a solid team performance. It was what we set up to do really, to get a result and we did that and the boys worked hard,” he said.

Manager Damian Locke has added plenty of fresh faces to the squad in recent weeks, with the talented Aaron Dobbs joining that list on Saturday morning after coming in on loan from Shamrock Rovers for the remainder of the season, and McCormack says the contribution of the newcomers should be applauded.

“We had three new lads coming in tonight and they did their job well and everyone put in the effort. We're working hard all the time and we'll continue to get better,” he said.

Although the Model county outfit are still struggling to put the ball in the back of the net it was a second clean sheet in a row for Wexford FC, something which McCormack was pleased about.

“It's what we set up to do, to try and catch them on the counter. Unfortunately Adam Hanlon went off and Danny (Doyle) was a bit isolated up front by himself, although Liam Donnelly did well when he came on as well. It was another clean sheet and we're happy about that,” he said.

Next up is a mouth-watering clash with leaders and local rivals Waterford FC at the RSC next Friday night and McCormack says they'll go into that game brimming with confidence.

“We're going to go at them I'd say. After picking up three good results on the bounce there's no reason we couldn't take them,” he said.
