Sligo Rovers received a major boost in their bid to stay in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division by beating fellow strugglers Limerick FC 2-1 at the Markets Field.
Ger Lyttle’s side earned their third victory away from home this season with Rhys McCabe and Greg Moorhouse hitting the target to move them into eighth place in the table.
It took a moment of magic from McCabe to break the deadlock early in the second half. After spotting Limerick keeper Brendan Clarke off his line, McCabe struck a free kick from all of 60 yards that flew all the way into the net.
“It was just instinct really,” said McCabe after the game. “One of our coaches said before the second half started that the keeper’s starting position was quite high.
“So with the wind and such a big pitch, you might have a chance to have a pop and catch him out. As I said it was just instinct. I’ve seen him off his line and I’ve struck it. Luckily I’ve hit it well and it went in.”
McCabe’s wonder strike proved to be vital for a Sligo team that had shaded the contest up to that point.
The former Scottish U-21 midfielder also had a hand in Moorhouse’s goal that ensured the three points went The Bit o’ Red’s way. McCabe is now hoping that the win can give Sligo the confidence to move up the table.
“We haven’t been in a good run of form up to tonight and we now have to take all the positives we can from the game and work on the negatives.
“We conceded a goal that we aren’t happy about but we can’t be too unhappy coming away from home and getting three points.
“Our home form hasn’t been great this season. It’s still early days obviously but we are playing good football. Maybe not getting the results and that could be down to a lack of experience on our behalf.
“Coming here though in the last 10 minutes, throwing bodies on the line – showing a different side to the game that maybe we need to add more of. We can build on that going forward.”
