Longford Town manager Alan Mathews wants his players 'to have a look at themselves' after the 2-0 defeat to Cabinteely in the SSE Airtricity League First Division.

A second-minute strike from Jack Watson and a fantastic final-minute effort from Kieran Waters sealed the impressive away win at the City Calling Stadium.

The result leaves Longford in sixth position in the First Division on four points whilst Cabinteely sit in fourth position on six points.

Mathews was left frustrated by the result and said his side's performance was not up to the required standard.

The Longford boss said: "Overall performance wasn't good enough, good luck to Cabinteely but very disappointed from our point of view.

We really need to look at ourselves, which we will and those two performances at home have not been acceptable.

"The opportunities we had to scratch off that goal, I couldn't believe we missed those opportunities.

"In the second half we didn't work the keeper enough and gave away another soft goal."

Mathews also believes the First Division is very competitive and that his side must make a sensational improvement if they are to be in the race for promotion.

He added: "Every team in this division has the capacity and audacity to beat each other.

If we want to have a good season this year we have to improve dramatically in a number of areas. We conceded two goals here tonight and if we want to have a good season that form has to stop and it has to stop now.

"That was the start of a particularly disappointing evening from our point of view. The goal after 90 seconds gave them something to hold onto and a real belief that they could get something from the game."

Longford Town travel to Belfield for their next encounter whilst Cabinteely play host to Cobh Ramblers next Saturday.
