Longford Town ended a depressing run of home games without a win stretching back to October 2015 when they recorded a 3-1 victory over Shelbourne at the City Calling Stadium.

Manager Alan Mathews was delighted to pick up the points and is optimistic heading into the second series of matches.

"I'm delighted for everybody associated with the club. It's been long overdue as you said and it's important that we started off this series of games with a positive result and I'm delighted we scored 3 goals and more importantly we have three points.

"It was very important that we got a win here tonight because it was our first home victory"

Shelbourne took the lead very early on through Dayle Rooney but the Dublin native was pleased with how his side responded after going a goal behind.

"I felt that we'd keep our composure. Long way to go in the game and I felt that we would get opportunities.

"It was very important that we didn't drop our heads which we didn't and got a good goal from a free kick and we got into the game.

"We hadn't really started. I'm disappointed with the way we conceded the goal to be perfectly honest with you.

"Its something we are going to have to look at but their was certainly plenty of time for us in the game to get back.

"We've been in that position before and we have addressed positively before, we did it again tonight."

Longford Town face Shelbourne again on Monday in the EA Sports Cup 2nd Round while they face a long journey down to Cobh for their next league encounter.

With Enda Curran in top form grabbing two goals today, the Midlands club will be very optimistic of maintaining their excellent run of form.
