Drogheda United manager Pete Mahon was pleased with his side’s performance despite a 1-0 defeat at home to St Patrick’s Athletic. The Drogs' winless run now extends to 14-games as they prop up the league table though Mahon saw enough from his side to take positives from the defeat. “We were more like ourselves tonight,” the Drogheda manager explained post-match. “I’ve been listening and reading during the week from different people that the team isn’t playing for me but I think those people got their answer tonight. "I know one swallow doesn’t make a summer but that’s two good performances in the last three games and it’s the kind of display that these supporters deserve.” The Saints, having already hit the crossbar twice, scored the winner on 14 minutes through Christy Fagan with Mahon believing the goal was easily avoidable. “They scored an identical goal like that against Bray Wanderers last week and everyone knows about Christy Fagan’s movement in the box. "We just fell asleep and it’s obviously disappointing that we didn’t defend it better.” Drogheda emerged from the half-time interval a different side and they were denied an equaliser in injury-time as Conor O’Malley produced a stunning stop to parry Adam Wixted’s close-range strike behind. “I haven’t seen a save like that since Peter Schmeichel against Newcastle, it was absolutely world-class. “Adam Wixted couldn’t have caught the strike any better and it denied us the point that I thought we deserved based on our second-half performance.” The Boynesiders find themselves eight points adrift of safety with only nine games remaining though Mahon is refusing to throw in the towel. “It’s going to be very difficult to get out of it but we’ve known that for a few weeks now. As long as it’s mathematically possible, we won’t give up hope. “I’ve no doubt that we’ll give Cork a good game next week and if we continue to play in the same vein as we did tonight, results will come."League of Ireland
