Despite a couple of stunning goals from young players Sean Hoare and Steven Kinsella, Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny wasn’t overly impressed with his team’s Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup second round 3-1 win over non-league Crumlin United at Iveagh Grounds.
Kenny certainly felt it was a far cry from the in-form Lilywhites’ rampaging display in beating Derry City in the opening round.
“In the first round against Derry, two of the top three, a really tough draw. It would have been a pressure game for us,” said Kenny, “(but) it was a brilliant display to win 4-0.
“(Saturday) was far from that. I think you have to give full credit to Crumlin who made it hard for us and negated space.
“We were careless after scoring the first goal, to concede a goal the way we did. We gave the ball away twice leading up to the free kick. It was a goal we could have easily prevented.
“We got the second goal from Sean Hoare, a really brilliant goal.
“The good thing about that goal is that he didn’t score it when we were three up, he scored it at 1-1 when you can be a bit edgy.
“That was his first goal for us and he’s playing very well of late and looks a really good player.
“Steven Kinsella also got his first goal for the club, so there were some plusses.
“Overall, we were below par, but we did enough to get through.”
