Wexford FC manager Brian O'Sullivan must have felt a mixture of joy and relief after watching his side earn an impressive 2-0 win over Bray Wanderers in their SSE Airtricity First Division match at Ferrycarrig Park. After beginning the season with four successive league defeats the doom merchants were out in force, but on Friday evening the Slaneysiders ripped up the formbook, with second-half goals from Emmet Nugent and Jack Doherty securing a statement victory. O'Sullivan admitted that his side have taken time to find their stride, but believes they can now look forward with a degree of confidence after getting the monkey off their backs. “It was a good performance. We've had a couple of poor performances and results over the last couple of weeks but we knew it wasn't that bad. We've been working hard, but just getting lads to know each other and gel together was always going to take time. After getting the win it will give the lads more confidence and we can go on again next week and try to improve again,” he said. Wexford were living off scraps in the first-half, but after the change of ends they looked dangerous every time they broke forward and O'Sullivan said it was something they spoke about in the dressing room during the interval. “It took us a while to get to grips with Paul Keegan in midfield. We spoke about it at half-time and once the lad did that it looked like Bray ran out of ideas and we were able to catch them on the break with the pace we have,” he said. Nugent and Doherty certainly took their chances well when the opportunities presented themselves, and the manager was fulsome in his praise for the match winners. “Emmet is a goal scorer. He's a centre-forward but he's doing well for us out on the left wing. He's working hard so we're just trying to get him higher up the pitch and into the final third and when he does he will get you goals. Jack is a good goal scorer as well and he took his chance really well. He'll only get better with time,” he said. You only get out of sport what you put into it and hard work definitely seems to be paying off for the Ferrycarrig Park outfit, but while the maiden victory will have come as a great relief to the squad O'Sullivan says they won't be resting on their laurels. “The win takes a bit of pressure off us. The lads have been working hard. We've added an extra day in at training. We said if that doesn't work we're going to do a double session for the extra session. We're going to work at it and try to improve, but it's only the start. We're happy with the win but we're definitely not going to sit on it,” he said.
