Drogheda United manager Tim Clancy believes his side are hitting top form at the right time after they defeated Cobh Ramblers 4-2 in a thrilling contest at United Park. A brace from Mark Doyle along with goals from Stephen Meaney and Sean Brennan sealed an important three points for the Boynesiders which moves them up to second in the table. “It’s all about results at this stage of the season,” Clancy admitted post-match. “I thought we played well throughout the 90 minutes and Cobh gave us a real challenge but we came through it. “There was certainly some relief when we scored the fourth because there were so many chances where either our finishing or decision making had let us down. “I can’t praise the players enough for the run we’re on; we’ve been missing key players like Adam Wixted and Mark Hughes but they keep grinding out the results.” Another Drogheda player who has suffered from injury this season is Mark Doyle with the forward announcing his return from a six-week absence with a brace. “Mark is a fantastic player, he’s so intelligent with his runs and positioning. That’s now consecutive seasons where he’s hit double figures from the left wing which is phenomenal. “We’ve missed him while he’s been out, in terms of both his goals and work rate, so it’s brilliant to have him back fit and in form.” While Drogheda are certainly free flowing in attack, they are the leading scorers in the First Division with 41, United have shipped more goals than any of their promotion rivals which is a concern for the Trim native. “We need to defend better. You can’t always score four goals every game and if we don’t improve, it’ll cost us. “From our point of view, they’re cheap goals to give away but you have to give Cobh some credit. I think they would’ve caused a lot of sides problems this evening.” With seven wins from their last eight games, Clancy is keen for his side to take their fine run of form into next week’s potential season defining clash away to fellow promotion hopefuls Longford Town. “Longford are one of the strongest teams in the league and they’ll be looking for a response after their defeat to Limerick tonight. “They’ve beaten us twice already this season so that shows how difficult a game it’s going to be for us but we know we can go there and get a result. “There’s very little between both sides, as the table suggests, so a win for either at this stage of the season could be crucial.”
