Finn Harps recorded an emphatic 7-1 win over Cabinteely to wrap up their regulation season in style ahead of their play-off Semi-final against either Shelbourne or Drogheda United.
A terrific display but one that Paul Hegarty said could have ended 7-5 with the amount of chances in the game.
“We were 2-0 up and it could have been 2 each at that stage, they had 2 great chances, one hit the crossbar and to be fair to Peter Burke, he made a great save.” he said.
“If I’m being honest the game could have ended 7-5 on chances maybe 8-5, there was some great stuff played, we made a few changes, people needed game time, it was very very good.” he added.
Harps now have to deal with a 3 week break before their next competitive fixture, something Hegarty says is not ideal.
“If you were on a bad run, you would like the small break for a week or two but when you are on a good run and things are going well, you want to keep it going.” he said.
In an effort to maintain the current momentum, Hegarty noted there will be preparations during this spell for the club.
“We will play maybe one or two matches if we can get things sorted out, it’s not easy this time of year with pitches and stuff like that but we will see what happens.” he said.
The game saw some great individual performances, Mikey Place and Paddy McCourt to name just two. On the subject of McCourt, Hegarty noted that on his day, there isn’t many better in the league.
“He was very good in the first half hour, I suppose if you put clips up of his first half hour, you could sell him to England again, that’s what Paddy is capable of and hopefully we will be available for the play-offs.”
“When Paddy doesn’t play for us, you miss that wee bit of quality, not being disrespectful to any of the rest of the players but they all know and we all probably know, that when Paddy is on his game, there is very few that has as much quality as him.” he added.
Harps potential opponents for the upcoming play-off will be whoever comes out on top between Shelbourne and Drogheda, teams which Hegarty says they know well.
When asked if himself or Ollie would be in attendance for the 3rd/4th place play-off he replied: “We will probably get a look at them somewhere along the line.
“We’ve already played them, look at Shelbourne, we drew with them three times and there has been nothing in the games with Drogheda when we have played them and I wouldn’t expect it to be any different now.”
