Limerick FC moved into fourth place in the SSE Airtricity League First Division after a 1-0 victory over Bray Wanderers at the Markets Field.

Super Blues captain Shaun Kelly proved to be the home side’s hero with a wonder strike six minutes from time that gave Limerick their first win in four games.

Kelly’s goal had all the hallmarks of his stunning effort against Finn Harps four years ago but the Limerick skipper was pleased to just get another three points on the board after a solid performance.

“It’s obviously nice to get a goal but I think the performance was the main thing,” said Kelly after the victory. “Getting the three points was the biggest thing.

“It’s another three points at home. Our home form has been pretty good, especially after the Wexford game. We were disappointed the last day but you know that you have days when you are going to draw.

“Last week we played well against Longford and knew that we should have come away with something but thankfully tonight the strike went in towards the end. That’s sometimes the luck that you need.”

Kelly also paid tribute to a couple of players that made their first starts for the club against Bray. Lee Devitt and Ger Barry were drafted in by Tommy Barrett due to an injury crisis at the club that saw them only field four substitutes.

Devitt impressed on the left hand side for the full 90 minutes, while Barry showed plenty of potential on the right hand side before being replaced by Kieran Hanlon.

“Both of them were brilliant. Coming into the first team is completely different to what they would have been used to. They have come in and done really well.

“Ger did very well for the 70/80 minutes and Lee was still running past people in the 91st minute and showed the legs that he has.

“Both of them have given Tommy a headache now when everyone comes back in from being injured so fair play to them. I thought they were excellent.”

Kelly’s goal was obviously the main talking point of the game and the right back was delighted to get the goal after some wayward shooting so far this season.

“When it came to me I knew I was hitting it – just making sure I got the first touch and hit it. Sometimes they go in and sometimes they don’t.

“Against Wexford I should have had three. Tonight I got once chance and it went in, thankfully.”
