Now that we have seen the 2018 SSE Airtricity League fixture list, it’s time to start circling the games that appeal most.
Here are five selections that have us quite excited:
Friday, February 16: Bohemians v Shamrock Rovers
There is nothing like a fiery derby game to crank up the excitement and this Dublin duel is the perfect way to kick off the new season. Bohs surprised almost everyone last season, while Rovers will feel that they are moving in the right direction with their squad building, so this promises to be an intriguing encounter.
Sunday, November 4: Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup Final
The perfect way to end any season: the Cup Final at the Aviva Stadium. Obviously nobody knows yet who will end up competing for the silverware – and the journey to get there is part of the fun – but this is always a game to look forward to and it rarely disappoints in terms of drama.
Saturday, September 15: EA SPORTS Cup Final
Last year’s final proved to be a showcase of Dundalk’s quality as they overcame a spirited Shamrock Rovers at a rain-soaked Tallaght Stadium. But this first in-season prize is one that every club will have their eyes on and that should, in turn, make the final a pulsating game to watch.
Friday, November 2: Promotion/Relegation Play-Off Final, Second Leg
Either one team falls or one team rises. That is the beauty of this game as the second-best team in the First Division squares off against the team unfortunate to end the regular season bottom of the Premier Division. Expect both teams to fight for every ball right until the final whistle of this one.
Friday, March 9: Dundalk v Cork City
This will be the first meeting of the top two teams from the last few seasons – if you discount the President’s Cup that is. Both sides should be slightly different with the likes of Sean Maguire and David McMillan gone, so there is a need for others to step up. This should be a cracker!
