Longford Town flew up the league table after claiming all three points against promotion favourites, Shelbourne.
Manager Neale Fenn was thrilled that his side were able to come out on top in what was a close contest throughout the match.
“I’m delighted with how it went. We knew we were going to have to be 100%. Shels have a squad full of good players and we would have to match them with our work rate, which we did. We got in their faces.
“I felt in the first half we played really well, in the second half we sat back a little bit and it was scary in that half. I felt we had to weather a lot of pressure but not too many clear-cut chances for them.”
Despite scoring two goals, the home side failed to create too much in front of the Shelbourne goal, but this isn’t a worry for the manager.
“I think it was a tough game, they’re a good team and we had to match them which we did. We created some half chances, had a bit of possession. [Creating chances] is not a fear for me. I think if you win a game 2-0, keep a clean sheet and look solid, you don’t need to be creating 10/15 chances a game. If you can nick two of them, that’ll do.”
The side have also a very impressive defensive record so far this season, conceding only one goal in all competitions, and this is a testament to the players brought in.
“The players we brought in are more defensively minded than ones we had last year. We certainly don’t set out, let’s not go out and attack. I haven’t overly thought about it, I just like keeping clean sheets at the moment and it feels good.”
