FAI, LOI pay tribute to Galway United’s Joe Hanley

All at the Football Association of Ireland and the League of Ireland are deeply saddened to learn of the death of former Galway United Chairman, FAI Council member and Connacht football stalwart Joe Hanley.

Described by the club as ‘Galway United’s greatest servant’ following his passing at the weekend, Joe was hugely instrumental in building the infrastructure that saw United win the League Cup in 1986, their first national trophy, the Men's FAI Cup for the first time in 1991 and also qualify for Europe on three occasions during his tenure as chair.

FAI President Paul Cooke said: “Joe’s influence on Galway football went way beyond the role of Chairman. He was a leader, a pioneer and a true believer in the potential of football in Galway and in Ireland. To his wife Annette, his family and Joe’s many friends within Irish football, we offer our sympathies and support at this difficult time.”

FAI Director Packie Bonner added: “I knew Joe for many, many years and he always had a smile on his face and the best interests of Galway United at heart. He was great company and a great football man. May be rest in peace."
