Limerick’s hopes of escaping relegation from the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division received a boost after they beat fellow strugglers Bray Wanderers 2-1 at the Markets Field.
It was Limerick’s first win in 10 games and despite recent player departures, club captain Shane Duggan believes that his side can escape the dreaded drop.
“It was a massive game tonight,” said Duggan of the Bray victory. “It probably wasn’t the prettiest performance but all that matters is that we got over the line.
“In the first 15 minutes of the first half we really came out bright and played some good stuff. They then probably had a good spell themselves.
“We then created a few chances and luckily we took them. Obviously we have to push on for next week and take every game as it comes.”
Limerick remain three points off third from bottom Bohemians after their victory over St Patrick’s Athletic but Duggan is fully focused on his side’s progress, rather than the teams above them.
“We have to concentrate on what we have to do. We still have to play them (Bohs) again and all the other teams have to play each other.
“There are going to be a lot of twists and turns but we can only concentrate on getting good results ourselves.”
It hasn’t been the easiest of week’s for the Markets Field outfit with financial insecurity issues surrounding the club.
Four players (Conor Clifford, Daniel Kearns, Mark O’Sullivan and Henry Cameron) have all departed and Brendan Clarke is rumoured to be on his way back to St Pat’s.
However, Duggan want’s to stay at his hometown club but did admit that there has been interest from other clubs.
“We knew earlier this week what was happening but we have a job to do. We have to be professional. It’s disappointing when you lose players but that’s football.
“I have had a couple of phone calls from different managers in the last few days but I’m a Limerick player and am contracted to Limerick.
“I was talking to Tommy (Barrett) during the week and told him that I want to stay. It’s not down to me but I want to stay here.”.
