It's been a long time coming but Wexford FC finally got their first league win of the campaign at the 13th time of asking when they overcame Shelbourne 1-0 at Ferrycarrig Park on Friday evening.
An early Thomas Croke strike was the difference between the sides and you could feel the sense of satisfaction after the final whistle that all the hard work on the training ground had finally translated into a precious victory.
One player that was certainly beaming was Wexford FC attacker Lee Duffy, with the former Shelbourne man clearly overjoyed that they had finally shaken that annoying monkey from their backs with a deserved win.
“I'm delighted. We were very unlucky last week (against Waterford) but thankfully things worked out for us tonight,” he said.
“It could have been an even more convincing triumph for Wexford FC, with the hosts going close to increasing their advantage before the end, but Duffy was just relieved to hear the final whistle that signaled their first victory of the season.
“We had a couple of great chances at the end. They were trying to push forward and we caught them on the counter-attack, but a win's a win and we're happy with it,” he said.
Duffy said the maiden victory was down to hard work and believing in themselves and he was full of praise for those around him after a fully merited victory.
“The boys at the back did very well tonight, fair play to them. The whole team worked hard. It's been coming the last while.
“After last week Damian pushed us on and said if you can play this way every week you're going to get a win, and thankfully tonight it came,” he said.
