If Drogheda United are going to face Finn Harps in the Promotion/Relegation play-off, they must do something they haven’t done this season – beat Cabinteely FC at United Park.

In the three fixtures at the Louth venue during 2019, the South Dublin outfit have won 4-1 and drawn 0-0 in the First Division while also winning 1-0 in the EA Sports Cup.

But Drogheda Assistant boss Kevin Doherty claimed they got past initial ring rust to claim a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the play-off final at Stradbrook on Friday.

“We know we can score goals. But we have to be careful not to concede.

"We’ll look forward to next week. It’s another 90 minutes under our belt, which we haven’t had for four weeks now,” he said.

“Hopefully, we’ll be a little more-sharper next week. Whatever happens, happens. But we’re certainly looking forward to it.”

The Boynesiders fell behind to Kieran Marty Waters’ early 25-yard rocket. But United skipper Jake Hyland fired in the leveller with 13 minutes to go.

It was the visitors first outing in 27 days since facing Bray Wanderers last month. And Doherty felt they started slowly before improving in a fine second half display.

“It was a good game; decent game – entertaining game. I thought we had a lot of half decent and very decent chances. We could have scored one or two more. Having said that, Cabinteely had their fair share as well. Going a goal down, it was a great striker by Marty (Waters) in fairness. We had to regroup and get back at them,” claimed Tim Clancy’s Assistant.

“I thought we played decent. I don’t think we were brilliant in the first half.

"We hadn’t played a game in four weeks – it probably showed. It took us a while to get going. In the second half, we more than matched them. We played well.”
