Drogheda United assistant manager Kevin Doherty believes his side is starting to hit top form after they defeated Galway United 3-0 at United Park.

The Drogs have now won three on the bounce to move up to second in the table with Doherty confident that his players are starting to click after a slow start to the campaign.

“I thought we were brilliant tonight,” the former Shels manager explained post-match. “It wasn’t the greatest game of football but I felt we were solid throughout the 90 minutes.

“We had been blaming our finishing for dropped points earlier in the season but now the goals are starting to flow and we’re the highest scorers in the First Division which shows how quick things can change.”

A big reason for the upturn in Drogheda’s form has been the performances of Chris Lyons, with the forward following up last week’s hat-trick at Cabinteely with a well-taken double.

“Chris was the difference between the sides this evening. He’s been unbelievable for us since we signed him and you can see his quality shine through with both finishes and his hold-up play.

“We had to take him off straight after his second goal as he’d been struggling with a knock but hopefully it’s nothing serious.”

Lyons was one of a number of injuries that Drogheda sustained on the evening with their squad being stretched to limit given the long term absences of Paul Skinner, Thomas Byrne and Adam Wixted.

“I’ve never seen a game like it. We picked up five injuries on the night and ended up finishing the game with nine men.

“It’s too early to tell if any of them are serious but hopefully a few of them will have recovered in time for next week.”

Drogheda will fancy their chances of extending their winning run when they face Wexford at Ferrycarrig Park next week though Doherty is wary of the threat they pose.

“I know they lost this evening but if you actually look at their results, no one is beating them by more than the odd goal.

“The biggest difference with Wexford this season compared to the last is that they’re a much bigger threat going forward with the likes of Danny Furlong and Jack Doherty.

“We needed an injury time winner from Mark Doyle to beat Wexford a couple of months ago so we know exactly how tough they’ll be.”
