6th May 1937: Shay Brennan was born on this day in Manchester, England. The former Waterford player-manager was the first English-born player to play for Ireland under the FIFA eligibility rules. He was also the first player to score for Manchester United after the Munich air disaster when he scored two goals (the first direct from a corner-kick) in a FA Cup match against Sheffield Wednesday at Old Trafford. He made 292 League appearances scoring three goals for United between 1958 and 1970, winning a League championship medal in 1964/65 and a European Cup winners medal against Benfica at Wembley Stadium in 1968. He guided Waterford to two League of Ireland championship titles in 1971/72 and 1972/73. He was capped 19 times for the Republic of Ireland between 1965 and 1970. Shay passed away on 9th June 2000.

6th May 1996: Shelbourne and St. Patrick’s Athletic drew 1-1 in the FAI Cup Final at Lansdowne Road. Dave Campbell (76) put the Inchicore side ahead but a goal four minutes from time Tony Sheridan, who played nine times in the FA Premier League with Coventry City, denied them a first Cup success since their previous victory 35 years earlier.
