4th May 1984: U.C.D. won the FAI Cup for the only time in their history when they defeated Shamrock Rovers by 2-1 in a replayed final at Tolka Park. It was a Friday night match as the sides had drawn 0-0 at Dalymount Park the previous Sunday. Joe Hanrahan (41) put the Students ahead but Jacko McDonagh (75) equalised from the penalty spot. The winning goal was scored by Ken O’Doherty in the fifth minute of injury time. The Students were under the joint managership of Theo Dunne and the late Dr. Tony O’Neill and went on to hold Everton, the eventual winners, to just a single goal scored by Graeme Sharp over the two legs of their European tie later that year.

4th May 1997: Shelbourne retained the FAI Cup when they defeated Derry City in the final at Lansdowne Road. Two late goals from Dave Campbell (80) and Stephen Geoghegan (87) sealed a sixth Cup triumph for the Reds. Mick Neville won his seventh winners medal and this was the third time that he had the honour of being the winning captain. Dave Campbell had scored in both final matches the previous year but for St. Patrick’s Athletic against Shelbourne.

The German goals were scored by Josef Posipal (31) making amends for the own goal that he conceded when the sides met a Dalymount Park seven months earlier, Ottmar Walter (77) and Bernhard Termath (87). Shay Gibbons (St. Patrick’s Athletic) made his international debut in this match which was attended by 75,000 spectators and refereed by the well-known and respected English referee, Arthur Ellis.

4th May 1966: As West Germany prepared for the 1966 World Cup in England, they travelled to Ireland for a warm-up match. West Germany ran out 4-0 winners at Dalymount Park with goals from Helmut Haller (5), Franz Beckenbauer (19) and Wolfgang Overath (55, 72) before an attendance of 16,091. Ray Treacy (WBA) made his international debut and Bobby Gilbert and John Keogh, both of Shamrock Rovers, were winning their only caps. It was a strong German side with only Jurgen Kurbjuhn, winning his fifth and last cap, not making the squad for the World Cup Finals. The legendary Bayern Munich and West Germany goalkeeper Sepp Maier, then aged 22 years, made his international debut in this match.

4th May 1969: Paddy Mulligan and Mick Leech of Shamrock Rovers made their Republic of Ireland debuts in a 2-1 defeat to Czechoslovakia. Former Ireland manager Eoin Hand (Portsmouth) also made his international debut in this World Cup qualifying match played at Dalymount Park. Hand replaced the injured Leech in the 44th minute of the match. Eamonn Rogers (15) put Ireland ahead but the Czech’s struck back to win the match with goals from Dusan Kabat (51) and Josef Adamec (65). Adamec would go on to score all three goals in the return match in Prague five months later.
