16th May 1982: Dan Murray was born on this day in Cambridge, England. Murray started his career at Peterborough United but after just three league appearances in three years with the Posh, Cork City signed him in 2002. He instantly became a fans favourite in his first spell at the club and was Cork's highest scorer in European competition. He was also captain of the side who won the 2005 Premier Division title on the final day of the campaign against Derry City and the FAI Cup winning side against Longford Town two years later. Murray moved to Shamrock Rovers in 2010 where he won the league title in 2010 & 2011 and captained Shamrock Rovers in their historic UEFA Europa League campaign in 2011/12 and returned to Leeside in 2012. He also won the Setanta Sports Cup with both Cork City (2008) and Shamrock Rovers (2011). Overall, he made 399 league appearances in the League of Ireland and retired in 2015.
16th May 1993: Shelbourne won the FAI Cup for the fourth time in their history after a 30 year gap from their previous success when they defeated Dundalk by 1-0 in the Final which was played at Lansdowne Road. Greg Costello scored the winning goal in the 59th minute of the match.
16th May 1998: Cork City won the FAI Cup for the first time in their history when they defeated Shelbourne by 1-0 in the replayed Final which was played at Dalymount Park. Cork City’s goalkeeper, Noel Mooney became only the fifth (and most recent) goalkeeper to keep a clean in a FAI Cup Final and replay following Paddy O’Reilly (Shamrock Rovers in 1929), Kevin Fitzpatrick (Limerick in 1971), Declan O’Mahony (Cork Hibernians in 1973) and Tim Dalton (Derry City in 1989). The Leesiders were captained by Declan Daly and managed by Dave Barry.
