12th May 1991: Galway United won the FAI Cup for the only time in their history when they defeated Shamrock Rovers by 1-0 in the Final which was played at Lansdowne Road. Captain Johnny Glynn scored the winning goal with just four minutes remaining following a precision cross from the late Tommy Keane. Manager Joey Malone had also been a Cup winner as a player three years earlier as Dundalk won the League championship and FAI Cup double.
12th May 1996: Shelbourne won the FAI Cup for the fifth time in their history when they defeated St. Patrick’s Athletic by 2-1 in the replayed Final played at Dalymount Park. The sides had earlier drawn 1-1 at Lansdowne Road. Dave Campbell (58) put Pat’s ahead – the third successive time that he had scored in a Cup Final match. Tony Sheridan (71), who had also scored in the original tie, equalised and Stephen Geoghegan scored Shelbourne’s winning goal with nine minutes remaining to be played.
On This Day in Irish Football - 12th May
12th May 1974: Ireland secured a fantastic 2-1 win over Chile at the Nacional Stadium in Santiago. Eoin Hand scored one minute before the break to give Ireland the lead. Francisco Valdes (75) equalised but Jimmy Conway scored the winning goal just one minute later. Don Givens and Carlos Reinosa were sent off in the 61st minute following an altercation. The attendance was 44,700 as Ireland became the first foreign side to play in Chile since General Augusto Pinochet's military junta ousted the socialist government of Salvador Allende in September 1973, as the final part of their three match South American tour.
12th May 1992: Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Darren Randolph was born on this day in Bray, Co. Wicklow. Randolph moved over to England from Ardmore Rovers, joining Charlton Athletic. His career was kick-started by a move to Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership and he has since played for Birmingham City, Middlesbrough and his current club West Ham United. Randolph played for the Republic of Ireland U17, U19 & U21 sides, and has since played 42 times for his country since making his debut against Oman at Craven Cottage in September 2016.
