25th June 1972: The Republic of Ireland lost by 2-1 to Portugal in their final Brazilian Independence Cup match played at the Estadio do Arruda in Recife. Peres (35) and Nunes (37) scored for Portugal with Mick Leech (38) getting the Irish goal. Jose Mourinho’s father, Felix, won his only cap in this match when he replaced Jose Henrique in the Portuguese goal with nine minutes remaining to be played.
25th June 1990: One of the most dramatic matches in Irish football history was played on this day in the Luigi Ferraris Stadium in Genoa. The Republic of Ireland and Romania played out a scoreless after 120 minutes of play in their Round of 16 clash at Italia 90. The Romanians went first in the penalty shoot-out and successfully converted their first four kicks taken by Hagi, Lupu, Rotariu and Lupescu when Ireland responding each time through Kevin Sheedy, Ray Houghton, Andy Townsend and Tony Cascarino. Substitute Daniel Timofte had his effort magnificently saved by Packie Bonner. Up stepped another substitute in David O’Leary and as the nation held it’s breath (to quote the immortal words of George Hamilton) sent Lung the wrong way from his kick to spark off unprecedented scenes of jubilation in Genoa and all over Ireland as the Republic of Ireland qualified for the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
25th June 2000: UCD AFC drew 0-0 away to FC Velbazhd of Bulgaria in a UEFA Intertoto Cup First Round Second Leg match. However, the Bulgarians progressed on the away goals rule as the first leg at Belfield Park resulted in a 3-3 draw.
25th June 2005: KAA Gent defeated Bohemians by 3-1 in a UEFA Intertoto Cup First Round second leg match to progress on a 3-2 aggregate score. It was a strong Bohemians side which included Ireland international Stephen Ward, Gareth Farrelly and Dominic Foley, who would later sign for the Belgian side, and who were managed by Georges Leekens. However, the advantage gained from the first leg at Dalymount Park was wiped out after only 18 seconds of play with a goal from Nordin Jbari and the Belgians added further goals in 11th and 60th minutes of the match.
