28th April 1923: Davy Walsh was born on this day in Waterford. The centre-forward started his playing career at Limerick in 1942 before he moved to Belfast side Linfield. Following the conclusion of the Second World War, Walsh moved to West Bromwich Albion in 1946 and became an instant hero at The Hawthorns having scored in each of his first six matches. In his four years at the Baggies, he scored 94 goals and he also played for Aston Villa, Walsall and Worcester City. Walsh played for both of the FAI & IFA representative Ireland sides during 1946 to 1953. For Ireland (FAI), he made 20 appearances with one of his finest moments coming in a 3-2 win over Spain in 1947 having scored two goals in the game. He died on 14th March 2016 at the age of 92 years.
28th April 1987: Simon Cox was born on this day in Reading. Cox made 30 appearances for the Republic of Ireland national team between 2011 and 2014, scoring four goals including on his debut in the 5-0 win over Northern Ireland at the Aviva Stadium on 24th May 2011. He played in all three matches against Croatia, Spain and Italy at Euro 2012. He currently plays for Western Sydney Wanderers having previously played for Reading, Swindon Town, West Bromwich Albion, Nottingham Forest and Southend United.
28th April 1993: The Republic of Ireland secured an important 1-1 draw against Denmark in FIFA 1994 World Cup qualifying at Lansdowne Road. Kim Wilfort (26) put the visitors ahead before Niall Quinn (74) equalised to secure an important point against the current European Champions with Ireland and Spain set to finish ahead of the Danes in the group to qualify for the Finals in the U.S.A.
28th April 1999: The Republic of Ireland defeated Sweden by 2-0 in a friendly match played at Lansdowne Road. Goals from Graham Kavanagh (75) and Mark Kennedy (76) secured the win as Stephen Carr made his debut.
28th April 2004: Former league legend Jason Byrne made his international debut on this day in a 0-0 draw against Poland in Bydgoszcz when he came on as a 90th minute substitute for Clinton Morrison. He won his second cap again as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat against Chile at Lansdowne Road in May 2006.
