24th April 1947: Cork United won the FAI Cup when they defeated Bohemians by 2-0 in the Final replay which was played at Dalymount Park. The sides had drawn 2-2 at the same venue four days earlier. Sean McCarthy (24) and Tommy Moroney (45) were the goal scorers to give their second and final success in the competition having previously won it in 1941 when they completed the League and FAI Cup double.

24th April 1955: Shamrock Rovers won the FAI Cup for the twelfth time when they defeated Drumcondra by 1-0 in the Final which was played at Dalymount Park before an attendance of 33,041. The winning goal was scored by Liam Tuohy in the 78th minute of the match. Player-coach Paddy Coad missed the Final through injury and Shay Keogh, who sadly passed away last week, captained the team in his absence.

24th April 1983: Sligo Rovers won the FAI Cup for the first time in their history when they defeated Bohemians in the Final which was played at Dalymount Park. Barry Murphy (35) gave Bohemians the lead but two goals from Tony Stenson (58) and local hero Harry McLoughlin (77) created history after five previous Cup Final defeats.

24th April 1996: Jack Byrne was born on this day in Dublin. The current Shamrock Rovers winger and Republic of Ireland international started his career at Manchester City before loan spells at Cambuur and Blackburn Rovers. He moved to Wigan Athletic in 2017 before he made a loan spell permanent at Oldham Athletic in 2018. A short move to Kilmarnock followed before Byrne returned home with Shamrock Rovers. His performances in the 2019 season earned him the PFAI Player of the Year and he has now made two appearances for the national side since his debut in the friendly win over Bulgaria last September when he became the 500th player to be capped at senior level. Byrne played for every age group for Ireland.

On This Day in Irish Football - 24th April 

24th April 1949: Belgium defeated the Republic of Ireland by 2-0 in a friendly match played at Dalymount Park. Lamberechts (49) and Mermans (84) scored for the Belgians. Five League of Ireland players made their international debut in this match – goalkeeper Willie Hayes (Limerick), Lar O’Byrne (Shamrock Rovers), John “Kit” Lawlor (Drumcondra) and the Shelbourne pair of Brendan Carroll and Gerry Malone.

24th April 1977: The Republic of Ireland drew 0-0 with Poland in a friendly match played at Dalymount Park. Goalkeeper Ron Healey (Cardiff City) and Mark Lawrenson (Preston NE) made their international debuts in this match.
