Pacey winger Joel Coustrain’s second goal in successive league games ensured Shamrock Rovers third league win in a row as they overcame Derry City in sultry conditions at the Tallaght Stadium.
“We were very confident going in and it was a great three points," said Coustrain, who also claimed an assist for Dan Carr’s opener.
A third custodian used this season has manned the Rovers’ nets for those three wins over Bray, Limerick and now Derry. Coustrain was full of praise for 16-year-old goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, who has kept three clean sheets. “He’s been very good. He doesn’t look nervous. He’s come in and he’s done brilliantly. He’s very brave and obviously he’s made very good saves.”
Former Sheffield United and Raith Rovers player Coustrain missed five matches during April and May, a run bookended by impressive victories for the Hoops over Cork City and St. Pat’s but also marked by a couple of disappointing league draws and an EA Sports Cup exit to Longford.
“I was injured for two weeks with my ankle, so I was chomping at the bit to get on and play games. When my chance came, I think I took that. Hopefully I can keep doing that in the next few games.”
Limerick native Coustrain crossed the Atlantic with some friends during the recent mid-season break. “I went to New York for the week. It was good fun. It was good to keep your mind off football for a bit and have a week’s break. Still, dying to get back and play.”
Coustrain will make his debut in European footbaIl in a couple of weeks, "I got it (Europa League draw) on Twitter. It was a good draw. (Sebastian) Larssen’s just signed for them. They’re a massive team playing in the Swedish national stadium.”
"I’ve never played in Europe. It will be a good experience. All the lads were talking about it saying it’s an unreal experience.”
