Drogheda United manager Tim Clancy was delighted with his side’s hunger for goals as they defeated Athlone Town 6-0 at United Park.
A brace from Mark Doyle, an own goal from Martin Walshe and strikes from Jake Hyland, Colm Deasy and Ciaran Kelly sealed a dream managerial debut for the Trim man.
“It was a very competitive game in the first-half,” the 33-year-old explained post-match. “We got the first two goals at the perfect time, settled our nerves down and then gave us a cushion at half-time.
“We emphasised at the break how important the third goal would be and how Athlone would find it very difficult to come back. Once we got it, we just kept going for more and that was very pleasing.”
It had been a long wait for the Drogs to kick-off their season with their fixture with Finn Harps a fortnight ago postponed due to floodlight repairs while another two fixtures fell foul of the weather.
“It’s been very frustrating for us having to wait to play. The biggest disappointment was the Harps game because the players were raring to go but maybe that left us a little hungrier this afternoon.”
While the Drogs boss was delighted with his side’s afternoon’s work, he is aware that sterner tests lie ahead with Drogheda traveling to Wexford on Friday.
“I went to watch Wexford last night and I thought the 3-0 score line was very harsh on them. They hit the woodwork and missed other chances so they didn’t have the rub of the green.
“We know it’s not an easy place to go and we’ll need to work on a game plan. Hopefully, today’s result will put us in a positive frame of mind.”
