Sligo Rovers manager Liam Buckley says they’ll continue to look at the teams ahead of them in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division, rather the ones behind them.

The Bit o’ Red beat UCD 2-0 at Belfield on Monday night, to open up a useful six point gap over the bottom two.

It leaves them seventh in the table, and level on points with sixth-placed Waterford.

‘It’s a very important win for us, bearing in mind where we’re at, ‘ Buckley told our reporter Peter Branigan afterwards. ‘We played quite well tonight. The pitch has played better than it feels under foot.

‘The last couple of weeks against Pats and Harps, we just didn’t turn up for the first-half. The second-halves, we were ok in both of those games.

‘In fairness today, we juggled a few things around, and I thought they put in a really good shift.

‘We’re trying to just look at the next one above us, which is Waterford and Pats above them. Everyone is looking at the team up, as distinct from the team down.

The game was one of few chances, with both Sligo goals coming from corners. Monday night’s visitors had won an even contest between the clubs earlier on in the season at The Showgrounds.

But this was a weakened UCD team, with Dan Tobin, Yoyo Mahdy, and skipper Gary O’Neill all starting on the bench.

Buckley says it didn’t affect the way the Students played.

‘UCD, they’re a terrific footballing team, and it’s the sum of their parts with them. Even the bench players that come in, they play to their style, and they try to stick to it.

‘But I’m sure they probably did miss them (the players) tonight. They’ve got to dig in now, and pick up points... not unlike ourselves.’
