Athlone Town's Colm Coss admitted pre-season 'has been tough' as they secured a surprise opening day win over Waterford.
The Midlands side were more than a match for the much-fancied Waterford and three minutes from the end, Coss found the perfect finish into the top right-hand corner to give the home side all three points.
Having been subject of a takeover during the off-season by Lee Power, Waterford have made a number of impressive signings from Premier Division clubs as they look to achieve promotion this year.
However, Athlone provided the Blues with a First Division reality check and Coss was delighted after the game.
Coss said: "It's a great result for us and we're absolutely delighted to be able to win our first game of the season.
"We've been getting on with what we needed to do and the manager has us well organised so I think we shocked a few tonight. It has been tough in the off-season.
"We've had a lot of new players coming in and there has been a bit of a language barrier but everyone has come in and put their heads down and got on with it.
"They're all good lads as well, they want to do well and I think we showed that tonight. We can definitely build on this result and maybe shock a few more teams."
