It was worth the wait as a collector’s item of a goal by Paul Fox helped Cabinteely to their first ever SSE Airtricity League First Division win over local rivals Bray Wanderers.
The South Dublin side made it five games unbeaten on Friday when defeating the Seagulls 2-1 in a tight game at Stradbrook.
After an injury plagued 2019 season for far, Fox registered his first goal since July 2017 (against Cobh Ramblers) as Cabo equalled their best-ever record of ten league victories in a single season.
“I was just focusing on the connection and making sure I hit the target” said the man of the match whose volley came off his right foot rather than his usual left peg.
“I’m only back after a long-term injury. So, I’ve got a good bit of form going. Hopefully I can push for the rest of the season.”
He continued “It was an excellent win – we needed it. We have to go to Shels next week and try to do the same.”
With four new signings, and Japanese star Yuta Sasaki scoring a sensational solo winner, Fox believes the depth of fourth placed Cabo squad is key to the rest of the campaign as they push towards the play-offs.
“It’s great. There’s good competition for places. Look at Yuta, he’s come in – two games – two winning goals. You can’t really complain. It’s great to have him at the club” beamed the 20-year-old.
With the Family Road Show at the venue, the big crowd were treated to a great night’s entertainment on and off the pitch.
“The crowd atmosphere was excellent - probably the best we’d had all season. They got right behind us and kept going right to the end.”
