2025 MFD preview - Athlone Town

With success in the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division last year, Athlone Town will now be hoping 2025 will be a memorable year in the Midlands for their SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division team as they make a charge for promotion.

Dario Castelo remains in charge this season with some highlights last year including knocking Waterford out of the Sports Direct Men’s FAI Cup and signs of promise at the Athlone Town Stadium.

However, there’s no doubt that the Club’s announcements in the off-season signal intent and a desire for a push for the title.

New bodies include 2025 SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division title winner Dean Williams, as well as other players plying their trade in the top flight last season including JR Wilson and Kailin Barlow from Sligo Rovers.

Star players from 2024 who have been kept on include striker Kyle Robinson, Dan McKenna and Aaron Connolly. Castelo will be hoping Williams and Robinson’s signature will be enough to replace top scorer Dean Ebbe’s goals after he has joined former Athlone Town Women’s Manager Ciaran Kilduff at Oriel Park.

Indeed, the pair meet on the opening night in a game that will be sure to raise tensions after Kilduff’s departure following his title success.

Other notable Club announcements for 2025 saw Noe Baba, Adam Wixted, Bastian Hery and the Cole Machine, Cole Omorehiomwan sign from Bray Wanderers.

After reaching the Play-Offs last season, Athlone Town faithful will be hoping this is their year.
