A look at Shamrock Rovers ahead of the new season
If The Hoops conducted their own version of supermarket sweep last year with multiple high-profile signings, this year is all about bunkering in and relying on those who they invested in.
The loss of defender Jess Gargan to Shelbourne opens a vacancy at right-back – especially with Abby Tuthill also leaving for Wexford – but the bigger concern is that one of their rivals has been strengthened as Gargan is one of the best in the League.
It’s not that Rovers need to rebuild. They narrowly missed out on finishing second in their first year back in the League and there is a talented group of players available to Collie O’Neill, so it’s a case of more of the same.
The return to Maria Reynolds from injury is a boost, while Alannah Prizeman, Ella Kelly, Shannon Coady and Anna Butler should be young players to monitor as they aim to make the step up to senior level.
It is also another year on for Lia O’Leary, Aoife Kelly, Jaime Thompson, Scarlett Herron and Joy Ralph – all of whom excelled last season and did not look out of place. Ralph, in particular, could emerge as a potent goal scorer.
Of course, the ace in the pack continues to be Áine O’Gorman. The captain is undoubtedly one of the greatest players in League history and remains pivotal to everything that Rovers do.
A title challenge will be expected from Rovers – both internally and externally. They will be fired up to prove that they can deliver.
