A look at Cork City ahead of the new SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division season

The only way is up for Cork after a disappointing season in 2023.

Danny Murphy has high standards and will expect more from his players. Finishing bottom of the table with just one League victory is simply not good enough.

There was a refreshing of the squad that saw veteran Danielle Burke depart and that raised eyebrows amongst supporters. But Murphy will want the focus to switch to the young players that he has shaped the squad around.

The signing of Orlaith O'Mahony from Shamrock Rovers was a good bit of business and she will add to a midfield that is led by Eva Mangan – a player who deserves more credit and a greater share of the national spotlight.

One of the most pleasing aspects of last year for Murphy was the emergence of goalkeeper Clodagh Fitzgerald, the steady displays of Heidi Mackin, the confidence of both Alix and Jesse Mendez, the no fear attitude of Kiera Sena and the creativity of Ellie O’Brien. They should all be even better again in 2024.

The Leesiders need to score more goals. A return of 11 from 20 League games is way short of what is expected. That means they need Heidi O’Sullivan, Christina Dring and Chloe Atkinson to be firing from early on.

Before they rush forward though, Cork must shore up their defence. They conceded 54 goals last time out. Building from there will help them to become a better all-round outfit.
