With the new SSE Airtricity League format meaning three teams faced relegation last season it was always going to be a battle for Finn Harps, who finished in 11th positions.

Recruiting the likes of Paddy McCourt and Caolon McAleer suggested a Harps push to a higher level, and indeed the team showed glimpses of a standard that could have warranted a mid-table finish.

The notable performances of the season included a 2-0 away win against local rivals Derry City and a resilient display on the opening day of the season against Cork City despite losing. But it was ultimately their results against their relegation rivals that was their undoing.

Injuries also played a part in Harps’ downfall with striker Danny Morrissey and attacker Eddie Dsane missing large chunks of the season through niggling and persistent knocks.

Star Player: Paddy McCourt
The signing of the former Celtic man was a shock in itself and the once Northern Ireland International could pick a pass that not many in the League would see. He capped off his season with a fine solo goal against Sligo Rovers.

What They Need For 2018
A goalscorer: During the 2017 season Harps scored 35 goals in the League, averaging roughly a goal a game. And it didn't bode well that their top goalscorer only played half of the season. Ciaran O’Connor finished with five goals to his name.

Fortress at Home: Harps went through the entire 2017 season without registering a clean sheet at home, in any league, that spells disaster. Forming a formidable defence could go a long way.

Realistic Targets For 2018
Chasing Promotion: Bouncing back from relegation is never easy and with the new format in place and the other teams strengthening, there will be stiff competition for the promotion spots, but a playoff berth is not overambitious for the Donegal outfit.

Promotion of youth talent: Finn Harps fared well in the underage leagues ranging from under 15s through to under 19s and Despite losing Marc Walsh to Swansea City, there are a number of players on the fringe of the first team.

Best Signing Made So Far
Ciaran O’Connor: A goal scorer was what Finn Harps needed and Ollie Horgan delivered. The former Dundalk player got off to a decent start last season and will look to add to his tally of goals for Finn Harps in the First Division.
