1,500 fans donate to fund to help Sligo Rovers during Covid-19
A fund, organised by the Bit O’ Red Supporters Trust, to assist Sligo Rovers financially for the rest of the year has passed €80,000 as it closes.
The fund was set up 10 days ago and the initial target of €30,000 was reached after less than a day.
Several more targets were set over the 10 day period and all were reached.
Fans, former players, supporters of Everton FC, Celtic, Accrington Stanley and other clubs which the Bit O’ Red have links in history with all contributed.
Everton fans in particular were generous, as dozens of fans donated from England, with Seamus Coleman and Dixie Dean’s connections to the club cited.
Sligo Rovers chairman Tommy Higgins said: “We have been taken aback by the response and over the last 10 days, I think we’ve seen some of the biggest strengths within our club.
“There is a passion here that always come to the fore. As we look forward to the restart, this fund will be a huge help financially and allow us to plan for the next few months in a much stronger position.
“There are still hurdles to overcome. But what we’ve seen is the defiance that Sligo Rovers has always had.
“I want to thank and congratulate the Bit O’ Red Supporters Trust. The supporters are the heartbeat of our club and they will be behind our team and management every step of the way from now until November.”
