Gary Rogers signs new Deal with Dundalk

Dundalk Football Club are pleased to announce that goalkeeper Gary Rogers has penned a new contract at the club.

Rogers has been an ever present between the sticks for the champions having won four league titles, two FAI Cups and two EA SPORTS Cup in his spell to date.

The Bohermeen native has made an incredible 203 appearances for the Lilywhites since signing from Sligo Rovers ahead of the 2015 season.

Rogers, who is 38 now, is in the form of his life and has managed 28 clean sheets in a superb season, extends his contract until the end of the 2020 season which will take him up to six seasons at Oriel Park.

Speaking to after penning the deal, Rogers was delighted to extend his stay and has targeted more trophies in the immediate future.

“It’s great to be staying. I am delighted to extend my contract. It’s good to know that going forward I will be here again next year. We have had a good season so far and we want to finish it strongly.

“There’s still a lot to play for with the FAI Cup final in a couple of weeks and then we have the Champions Cup against Linfield. We are aiming for more of the same.”

The Meath man has enjoyed his five seasons to date and praised the culture of the group at Oriel Park for the standards that they set.

“I am enjoying my football at Dundalk. When you get to the tail end of your career there’s always that desire to get as much as you can out of it.

“The training and the culture which exists at the club is what has helped me have such a great time the last few years, if I am not in the best condition possible I won’t play.

“That’s the standards at the club and I have been pretty happy with my form and I want to continue that. “

Winning trophies is something which the net minder has become accustomed to since his Sligo Rovers days.

An incredible haul of five league titles, three FAI Cups, two League Cups, three President’s Cups and a Setanta Sports Cup has been accumulated during that time.

It makes him one of the most decorated players in the league’s history  and feels that this has been the best part of his career.

“In one of my first season’s I won the first division and then there was a bit of a wait to pick up the FAI Cup in 2005. Ever since 2011-12 I have been lucky enough to pick up silverware.

“Once you get a taste for it, it makes you want to win more and I have been able to do that over the past few seasons and I want to add to it.”

In a career which has spanned 20 years now, it has seen trophies and Ireland call ups as well as record appearances.

Rogers feels it is a ‘privilege’ to be in a profession that he loves and never takes it for granted.

“I am enjoying it here and I want to continue for as long as I can. It’s not a chore to go to work and I feel very privileged in ways to go out and enjoy my job, I do something that I love for a living.

“That will always encourage me to continue, as long as I am performing on the pitch I would be hopeful of being here and I am just glad to have it sorted.”

Dundalk FC Head Coach Vinny Perth said about the renewal: “Gary has had a wonderful career so far and the fact that he is still going is testament to how professional he is on and off the pitch. He is the first person in to training every single day and his dedication has paid off in the last few years with his form. Over the past two seasons he has conceded just 35 goals and as a result I feel that Gary has been the best goalkeeper in the league.

“He is an outstanding professional and a person. He is a strong member of our group, he is a real leader in the dressing room by his actions. I must thank the hard work and dedication of Mike Treacy in securing another senior member of our squad for next season as we set about reaching our new goals.”

Dundalk FC Chairman Mike Treacy added: “Gary continues to show his excellence every year with Dundalk Football Club and we are pleased that he has extended his time here into a sixth season. Gary is redefining what footballers in Ireland can achieve with hard work and dedication. His record of clean sheets during this historic year were pivotal to our success”
