1,636 days since his last League goal but Chris Shields leads Dundalk to victory against Shamrock Rovers

Dundalk went top of the league tonight with a 2-1 hard fought victory over Shamrock Rovers at Oriel Park.

In an intense affair Dundalk got the better of Stephen Bradley’s side with goals from Robbie Benson & Chris Shields.

The 3,056 fans inside Oriel Park were kept on the edge of their seats as Dundalk hit both the bar and post and could have easily been two up before the break.

After the break Robbie Benson put the hosts ahead and Chris Shields then put the lilywhites two up.

The ever present and torn in Dundalk’s side Daniel Carr pulled one back for Rovers who threatened until the end but couldn’t find the equaliser.

Dundalk: Gabriel Sava; Sean Gannon, Dan Cleary, Stephen Folan, Dane Massey; Chris Shields, Robbie Benson; Jamie McGrath (Stephen O’Donnell 76), Krisztian Adorjan (John Mountney 64), Michael Duffy; Patrick Hoban (Marco Tagbajumi 82).

Shamrock Rovers: Kevin Horgan; Ethan Boyle, Roberto Lopes, Lee Grace, Luke Byrne (Brandon Miele 67); Greg Bolger, Ronan Finn; Joel Coustrain (Gary Shaw 74), Graham Burke, Sean Kavanagh; Daniel Carr.

  1. Stephen Bradley was right when he said that Rovers wouldn’t challenge for the title this season…..but not for the reasons he mentioned. Rovers are as good as Dundalk and Cork if they play to their best but they are paying the price now for not addressing the goalkeeping issue. No team that wins a title has a poor keeper between the sticks. Horgan may well be one for the future, Tomer is only average. The games that Rovers lost this season, if they swapped keepers with the opposite team, they would have won! Also Luke Byrne, Joel Coustrain are not up to the required standard and should not be in the team ahead of Miele, McAllister , Gilchrist, Bone or Joey O’Brien.
