With the season starting on Friday we wanted to get the views of some past players & pundits on their predictions for the 2018 League of Ireland season.
We have asked for predictions of Premier Division winners and the player of the season for 2018.
Here we go… Let us know your views…
Padraig Amond (Newport County)
League: Cork City – ‘I think Cork will retain their title. They have made some very good additions to their squad and should be just too strong for Dundalk. Still I’m hoping I’m wrong and I want Shamrock Rovers win the league. Bradser is doing some great work there so it would be great if we could be closer to the top of the table this year and win a trophy too.’
Player of the year: Ronan Murray, Kieran Sadlier or Greg Bolger. Can’t narrow it down to one
Andy Boyle (Doncaster Rovers)
League: Dundalk – I will have to go with Dundalk to win it back this year.
Player of the year: It’s a tough one but I believe Robbie Benson will be the League’s player of the year this season.
Paddy Barrett (FC Cincinnati)
Player of the year: I believe Pat Hoban will win player of the year this season.
Declan Fabio O’Brien (Media Pundit)
League: Definitely Dundalk for me this year.
Player of the year: Robbie Benson will be running the show taking over from McEleney so I believe he will be the player of the year. Dundalk’s new Hungarian midfielder Krisztian Adorjan looks top quality. Graham Cummins of Cork City I believe will be the League’s top scorer.
Johnny Ward (Media / LOI Weekly podcast presenter)
League: Cork City – If you are betting on who will win the league this year, Caulfield’s Cork deserve your money.
Player of the year: Kieran Sadlier of Cork City will be the standout player this season.
Craig Colgan (LeagueofIreland.ie)
League: I think Cork City will be too strong for Dundalk this season but the gap will be nowhere near what it was last season. Cummins & Sadlier could be the difference.
Player of the year: Michael Duffy of Dundalk.
Stephen Elliott (Morpeth Town)
League: I have a feeling Cork may just have enough to be successful again this year. They have made some really good acquisitions in the off season. With Cummings coming back too I feel he will be the guy to get the goals that went missing last year when Sean Maguire went PNE. Dundalk will push them close again no doubt and it shall be very intriguing to watch.
Tony O’Donoghue (RTE Presenter)
League: I have to say Cork City to win it but I certainly think it will be a lot closer this year. I think Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk will be strong and expect Waterford to be the dark horses this season. Limerick and Bray could struggle to survive.
Player of the year: I would have Barry McNamee as Player of the Year
