Shamrock Rovers took all 3 points at the Markets Field on Tuesday evening. Goals from Dave McAllister and Captain Ronan Finn secured the win for Rovers.
Limerick got off to a flyer and had a great chance to open the scoring 22 seconds into play. Good work from Chiedozie Ogbene and new signing Peter Berki set up Dean Clarke but Clarke could only put his shot over from the edge of the box.
A terrific double save from Brendan Clarke denied Rovers the opening. Clarke first saved well from a Brandon Miele shot and then made a terrific reaction save from Dave McAllister follow-up.
Rovers then almost found a breakthrough. Youngster James Doona found space 20 yards out after some good play by Finn and Ryan Connolly, but Doona failed to hit the target and dragged his shot narrowly wide.
41 minutes in and Rovers finally found a breakthrough. A Ronan Finn corner found an unmarked McAllister in the box and his powerful header found the back of the net. Limerick have had trouble defending set pieces all season and this header was the fourth goal they have conceded in two games from set pieces.
Rovers dominated from the start of the second half and scored again in the 57th minute, which secured the game for them. Captain Finn took advantage of a poor clearance from Tony Whitehead and smashed in a volley from the penalty spot.
Brazilian Rodrigo Tosi came off the bench and had the best Limerick chance of the half but he headed just wide from a Lee-J Lynch free kick.
This result leaves Limerick 3 points away from the relegation zone and with fans calling for Neil McDonald to go the coming weeks will be crucial if Limerick are to stay up with big games coming up against teams around them.
