Limerick moved up to 4th in the league with a convincing 3-0 victory over Drogheda in the Marketsfield. Limerick started the better side and after just 3 minutes took the lead. A Lee-J Lynch corner found the head of Rodrigo Tosi who flicked into the Drogheda net for his 5th goal of the season. Limerick found the net again minutes later. Chiedozie Ogbene cut inside off the left and released a shot, the ball struck Chris Mulhall and rolled in past Stephen McGuinness.
Tosi was a threat all game and almost found a 2nd. Shaun Kelly overlapped down the right wing and put a low cross into Tosi but the brazilian could only hit his strike wide under pressure from the Drogheda defence. Tosi was then gifted an opportunity. A ball was played in behind the Drogheda defence. McGuinness came to collect the ball but got in a mix up with Kevin Farragher. Tosi took possession but his shot was saved from a retreating McGuinness.
After the break, Limerick regained their domination. A Brendan Clarke kick out fell to the feet of Chiedozie Ogbene, he beat Colm Deasy and then seemed to foul Luke Gallagher but the referee did not spot it. The youngster then shot over McGuinness’s head to seal the win for the Blues.
Lee-J Lynch went close when his shot from outside the box rocketed off the bar. Minutes after Limerick should have added another. Tosi flicked onto substitute Dean Clarke who raced clear but his shot was saved onto bar by Stephen McGuinness. Clarke then went close again. He found space after a one-two with Tommy Robson and tried to bend a shot into the top corner but McGuinness was equal to it and pulled off an excellent save.
A poor night from Drogheda who were completely outclassed from the start of the game. A second win for Willie Boland as interim manager and is now surely in the running for the permanent role.
