Following on from the news all Gypsies fans wanted to hear, their talismanic striker signing a new deal for the 2017 season. I spoke exclusively to the man in question regarding his big decision.
As mentioned earlier the forward was in big demand amongst clubs in the League of Ireland and across channel, so what made him resign on the dotted line for the Phibsboro based outfit?
“Izzy” explains: “I feel like I didn’t do enough last year with injuries and illness, so I guess it’s a case of unfinished business.”
The ex-Bray Wanderers star was also keen to add that the constant transfer speculation in recent weeks was beginning to grate on him. “Although there were offers on the table but I was not planning on leaving. It was all just paper talk. Don’t believe everything you read!”
A steely determination then came across the eyes of the 22 year old when asked what he plans to do now that his immediate future has been resolved, “I plan to hit the ground running, I’m getting myself healthy and starting my preseason from now. I had a very frustrating end to the season as you know, and hurt that I couldn’t help the team. But I plan to make up for lost time and I can’t wait to get Dalymount rocking again.”
There is no doubt that Akinade is one of the leagues great young talents, and could have the world at his feet if he continues his development and who wouldn’t bet against him being one of, if not the leagues top scorer next season.
