With stakes so high tonight at Oriel Park in this top of the table clash we feel that Cork City will get one over on their rivals and defeat Dundalk for the fourth time this season.
City are on a great run of form collecting 13 points from 15 in their last 5 games while Dundalk collected 10 points.
The season has obviously taken on such historic heights for Stephen Kenny’s men with their amazing run in the Europa League and are currently in pole position to make the last 32 in the group, but ultimately one would think the games are seemingly going to take its toll on Dundalk.
In the last three game Cork City have scored 13 and conceded 4 goals while Dundalk’s last three games seen them score 4 goals while conceding 5 which is unheard of for Stephen Kenny’s men.
Cork City haven’t conceded an away league goal since April which is a huge beneficial & stand out fact going into this fixture
To give Dundalk the immense credit they deserve, they are still on top of the table, in the Europa League and the FAI Cup Final (again) and are on course for the greatest season possibly in history of the League of Ireland but unfortunately today we think this game particularly has come at the wrong time for Kenny’s men.
Cork’s only two defeats of the season were on August 8th to Sligo Rovers (1-2) & Derry City on 11th March (opening day) when they were defeated 1-0 at the Brandywell.
Dundalk have been defeated a total of five times in the league, twice against Cork City already and the other losses coming against Sligo Rovers, Bray Wanderers & Galway United.
Strikers will be the key tonight, with Sean Maguire on fire at the moment, the Ireland u21 star will be looking to get one over on his former employers an put Cork in the driving seat for the league title.
He now has even surpassed Dundalk’s David McMillan as the league’s top scorer with 16 league goals so far.
Injuries could also be a huge factor in the way the game will go, Dundalk have big players missing (Robbie Benson (groin) and Patrick McEleney (hip) ) but Cork City also have key men unavailable including John Dunleavy, Alan Smith & Gearóid Morrissey.
The game certainly has a cup final feel to it, this will have all fans tense and on the edge of their seats which is fantastic for the brand and growth of the League of Ireland, but ultimately we at LeagueofIreland.ie feel that Cork City will leave Dundalk with all three points tonight.
Odds: Dundalk 7/5, Cork City 2/1 & Draw is 9/4
