Cork City looking to close the gap at the top tonight with victory over Sligo Rovers

Cork City return to league action on Monday night, as they welcome Sligo Rovers to Turner’s Cross.

City are second in the table, six points behind Dundalk with a game in hand, and they go into the game with nine victories in their last ten league games. The visitors are in sixth place in the table, on a run of two wins and three draws in their last five games, but their last outing saw them record an impressive 5-0 win away to Wexford Youths.

Speaking ahead of the game, City boss John Caulfield said he wants his side to continue the good form they showed in Europa League action: “It has been a very intense six weeks and we intend making a couple of changes. Overall, it was a fantastic European campaign and I am hoping that will stand us in good stead for the second half of the season. While we were disappointed on Thursday night, we are well aware that we have a massive match tomorrow night. We trained well this morning and there are no excuses; we need to win the match and we know that.”

“Sligo have done really well, they are a tricky team and they have a lot of pace and energy in their side. They had a great win on Friday away to Wexford, so we know we will have to be on our game and I expect us to be ready from the off tomorrow.”

“I think our supporters can see that the league title is up for grabs. We are right in there and, with a big crowd behind us every week, we need to win all of our home games and we need to start with that tomorrow night. We need to ensure we get our own points, it doesn’t matter what other teams do if we don’t pick up our own points. In this league, you underestimate anyone and they will beat you.”
