Dundalk have left themselves with some work to do in the second leg of their champions league tie with Bate Borisov in Tallaght Stadium next Tuesday after they were defeated one nil in the Borisov Arena tonight.
On the night it was Mikhail Gordeychuk’s strike that was the difference between the two sides.
Dundalk seemed to sit back and let the Belarus side come at them for most of the game which made for some close shaves and good defending keeping the score at only the one.
One of the main talking points was in the thirtieth minute when Borisov’s Zhavnerchik should have been sent off for an obvious hit on Stephen O’Donnell that was only sanctioned by a yellow card.
The main chance for Dundalk in the whole game came in the thirty fourth minute when a brilliant Daryl Horgan run down the left flank was pulled back to Robbie Benson in the box and Benson hit a clean strike only to have the keeper luckily parry it away for a corner.
Only a minute into his introduction Gordeichuk got the crucial goal. Ex Barca man Alex Hleb intercepted Gannon’s attempted ball forward and showed great composure to play in the running Gordeichuk who fired low at Rogers and the ball went in off the inside of the left post.
An unfortunate error on Gannon’s side hopefully will not be too costly overall for Kenny’s men.
Rogers will be disappointed with the goal going in near post but overall the Meath man should be proud of his display as he certainly was a big factor in the score remaining at only the one goal.
Dundalk certainly will take positives from the game and will throw everything that they have in a win win game for them next week in Tallaght, as the Louth side are still guaranteed a shot at the Europa League in the play off round if defeated.
