Every fan of the Airtricity league or Irish football fan in generally I’ am sure has already heard the fantastic news that ex St. Pats and Bohs star Chris Forrester has been named in Martin O’ Neil’s squad for Ireland’s upcoming friendlies against Switzerland and Slovakia.
Chris himself has made the two appearances for Ireland at u21 level in the past but this is his first call up to the senior squad.
This call up has come off the back of his recent move to league one side Peterborough United who he signed a three year deal with for an undisclosed fee.
Since joining Chris has bagged himself two goals for the club but more importantly made headlines for his performances in his new holding midfield role.
When playing in our league Chris was more known more for his skilful ability often as a winger or playing in that number ten role.
However, since moving to Peterborough he has settled into the holding midfield role very well showcasing the more technical and smart side to his game.
Chris has impressed big time since making the switch and has added himself to the list of players that have come from the league of Ireland and made a mark from themselves abroad.
Once again this is showing the impact that our small league has on the league.
It is always a great lift for everybody involved with the league when one of our own goes abroad and get called up for our national squad.
Of course it would be great to think that if a player is good enough playing in the league of Ireland he can get called up based on his performances over here.
With players currently in our league like Daryl Horgan, Brandon Miele and Sean Hoare just to name a few been highly rated in our league it’s just a shame that they seemingly have to go abroad to achieve first team international success.
No matter whom your alliance belongs to in the league you always get a sense of pride when you see a lad who watched at your local ground go across and be successful.
