John Delaney backs the idea of a Mayo based League of Ireland team

It has come out that FAI chief executive John Delaney will back plans to have a team from the Mayo Football League drafted into the League of Ireland by 2012.

Delaney was at the launch of the Mayo Football League Strategic Plan 2016-2020 in Castlebar last week and according to the local newspaper the ‘Mayo News’, he said the the Mayo League was ‘very progressive’ and ‘one of the most professional leagues in the country’.

He went on to state his intent to assist the League develop by saying ‘I look forward to working with you to ensure that you reach all these objectives between now and 2020’.

A lot of work would have to go into the development of a financially stable club that attracts fans each week, can it be done?
